Post cards

Here is another post card as promised. When I visit the island of Kauai, I spend part of my time there painting. And what inspiration for an artist! I usually paint several post cards and maybe a small painting or two while I'm there and I take plenty of photos to bring home to work on paintings in my studio.

Post cards

Well, I've been doing some post cards as I promised and here are 2 of them. The first one is of Mt. Adams in Washington state. This is beautiful country! And for you artists out there, painting post cards ( size 4 x 6) is a fun way to brush up on your skills and have a painting done in no time. It's best to paint quickly and not worry about any mistakes. If you do make a mistake, you don't feel so bad about starting over since it's a small size paper.

I am currently working on painting daily postcards in watercolor. As an artist it gives me the opportunity to paint many subjects and it is sometimes easier than facing that large, blank piece of paper! I have also found that several collectors of my art prefer small paintings to give as gifts and also to keep! Anyway, I will post some of those on this site also. If you are interested in purchasing one, let me know.

Contemplation

This painting was done last summer after a trip to the beach in Bandon, Oregon. The sun was setting and the rock formations on the beach were stunning! I added the figure to the scene later.

After the storm

This is a watercolor and collage painting of Mt. Hood in Oregon. It was spring time and there had just been a thunderstorm passing through. When the sun came out, it lit everything up brilliantly, especially the snow packed mountain against the stormy, dark sky.

A Healing Place

This painting is a combination of acrylic and watercolor. I was going for a loose, abstract look and just began by laying down colors and letting them merge and blend as they chose. As I worked on the painting, the image took shape and reminded me of a wooded area near a pond where I always went as a teenager when I had the blues and needed a place to go to reflect and heal.

Tropical Natives

I liked the idea of combining a native tropical flower (plumeria) and the Hawaiian petroglyphs found throughout the islands. It is an intriguing combination celebrating two different natives.

After the Rain

One of the best parts of being in Hawaii, of course, is the weather. I love the way it rains in the morning and then that warm sun pops out and sets everything all aglow!

Tropical Greetings

As much as I love the Pacific Northwest, the beauty of Hawaii is also awe inspiring. Kauai is my favorite island and I have visited it several times, each time gaining new inspiration for paintings. The hibiscus flower comes in several colors, but I think the red ones are my favorite.

Secret Path

One of my favorite past times (besides painting) is hiking. Deep within the woods near Mt. Adams in Washington, was this path, highlighted by the bright sunlight and leading to hidden depths of mystery just beyond the trees.

Early Morning Light

While driving early in the morning I caught this beautiful sight of Mt. Hood (in Oregon) in the distance. The blue of the mountain silhouetted against the peachy/orange morning sky was striking. I didn't have my camera with me at the time, but painted the scene from memory. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest never ceases to amaze me.

The Columbian Gorge is a beautiful, scenic area just east of Vancouver, Washington. It is beautiful any time of year and any time of day, but especially beautiful toward the end of a glorious day-just before and during a glorious sunset.

Painting Adventures

The simple wild beauty of sunflowers has always said "summer" to me. This is an original water color painting of a field of sunflowers in Clark County, Washington from a photo I took several years ago. The field is gone now, having been turned into a housing subdivision. But the beauty of the sunflowers and sky will remain forever with me and in this painting.
